ABOUT OPUS

CANADA'S CLASSICAL MUSIC MAGAZINE, SINCE 1978

OPUS, Canada’s essential classical music source, is the choice of musicians, concert-goers and music lovers of all stripes, with feature interviews, reports from music events in Canada and elsewhere, news items, opinionated columnists and reviews of the latest CDs, DVDs and books about music and musicians.

With subscribers in Canada, the U.S. and overseas, OPUS provides coverage of all styles and periods of music in the classical tradition, from early music, to the grand Romantic era, and on to the latest contemporary trends. We place a strong emphasis on musicians, singers, ensembles, choirs, orchestras, opera companies and activities involving Canadians, either at home or abroad.

Founded in Toronto in January 1978 as Music Magazine, by publisher Anne Barrett and editor Ulla Colgrass, OPUS is Canada’s oldest general magazine on classical music. Over nearly 30 years, we have strived to provide our readers with a window into the minds and creative processes of performers and composers from all eras–all the while seeking to offer a fair balance in order to appeal to seasoned listeners and to those who are new to this great tradition.

As Colgrass said in her editorial introducing the first issue, which included an entertaining feature interview with the great Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester:

“Bringing these artists across the footlights and presenting their thoughts to you is one of our most important objectives. By removing the anonymity, the artists will become much more relevant to our own world.”

OPUS is published four times per year in March, June, September and December.
